Cavite student wins annual DPC-PLDT visual arts contest

PRESS RELEASE

An oil painting called “Jeeploma”, depicting a jeepney driver’s pride as a hard-working father, bagged the grand prize of the 32nd Visual Arts Competition (VAC 32) of Directories Philippines Corporation and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company.

The work by Paul Taladtad from Adventist University of the Philippines of Silang, Cavite bested entries submitted by fine arts students this year to the annual tilt. The much-awaited art competition among the country’s schools of fine arts captured the interest of the judges with its interpretation of this year’s competition theme, “Pinoy Pride.”

Jayvee Valencia of Bulacan State University won second prize for his entry, “Ngiti”, while Kenneth Leo Pamlas from Tarlac State University won third prize for “Bayanihan Sa Bayan ni Juan”, an acrylic painting showing a known Filipino custom bayanihan. Aside from the VAC 32 trophy and cash prize, the Fine Arts schools of the top three winners also received cash donations and replicas of the VAC trophy that was designed by National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva in 1990.

Louis Rafael Espinosa from the University of Santo Tomas won the VAC 32 People’s Choice Award with his entry “Kulturang Dalisay.” The winning entries will grace the covers of the 2018-19 White and Yellow Pages PLDT directories.

“Jeeploma”—a play on the words, “jeep” and “diploma”—highlights a jeepney coin box with graduation pictures of the driver’s three children and coarsely textured coins and peso bills, along with the driver’s work-worn hands, to convey the sense that every centavo had been hard-earned and well-spent.

Taladtad, the grand prize winner, said he got the idea from personal experience, while enrolled in the University of the Philippines in 2009-2012. “Minsan, habang nakasakay ako sa jeep sa UP IKOT, napansin ko pagkatapos kong magbayad na inilagay nung driver yung barya sa coin box na may graduation pictures ng mga anak niya. Na-touch po ako noon, dahil jeepney driver din po ang papa ko,” Taladtad said. “Naalala ko, mayroon din pong nag-post online, siguro five years ago, ng picture na kuha din sa jeep na yon. Nag-comment ako noon: ‘ang gandang gawing tula o painting.’”

The photograph Taladtad refers to was originally posted by Justin Linatoc in November 2012, and the winning artist acknowledges that it had been one of his sources of inspiration.

More than 70 art works from fine arts students from all over the Philippines with different interpretations of the theme were submitted for the competition. Thirty entries were singled out as finalists and were exhibited at the Little Theater Lobby at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from March 13 to 20, 2018. Entries were judged according to visual composition, originality, adherence to theme and suitability as cover.

The awarding ceremonies were held Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the CCP Main Lobby.

The panel of judges was composed of Chris Millado, Vice President and Artistic Director at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; Don Djerassi L. Dalmacio, Awardee of 2009 Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists; Ruben Fortunato M. de Jesus, award-winning illustrator of children’s books, and founding member of the Illustrador ng Kabataan (Ang InK); Marabini S. Williamson, seasoned advertising and publishing expert, formerly of McCann-Erickson Phils; and Wesley Valenzuela, 1995-1996 DPC-PLDT VAC Grand Prize Winner.

VAC 32 is an annual arts competition organized by DPC and PLDT for student artists in the Philippines. The competition has explored various art forms using different media over the past three decades.

Filipino MMA fighter Kevin Belingon not letting go of position as top bantamweight contender

PRESS RELEASE

For the past four outings of Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon inside the ONE Championship cage, the Filipino knockout artist has proven himself as the next worthy contender for the coveted ONE Bantamweight World Championship.
However, Belingon is having a slight detour towards his goal to meet division kingpin Bibiano Fernandes in a rematch as he has been booked to duke it out with American veteran Andrew Leone.
Both men are slated to face each other in a three-round bantamweight affair in the main event of ONE: HEROES OF HONOR, which takes place at the 20,000-seater SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on April 20, 2018.
“I will be back in action again this April. I am excited because the bout will be held in Manila. It favors me because it is always a delightful experience to perform in front of my countrymen at the Mall of Asia Arena,” Belingon said.
Many cageside pundits believe that Belingon did enough to earn a date with Fernandes, who successfully defended his gold-plated strap against two-division world champ Martin Nguyen by way of split decision last 24 March.
Ever since yielding to Fernandes in January 2016, Belingon has run through his recent opposition by piling up four-straight stellar victories.
“Like any other martial artist in this promotion, my goal is to become world champion. I was given a shot at the title a few years ago, but I fell short against Bibiano Fernandes. I want another shot at the title. I have been working very hard to make sure I keep winning,” Belingon stated.
Belingon hails from the acclaimed Team Lakay in Baguio City, which has produced its fair share of world champions such as Eduard Folayang, Honorio Banario and Geje Eustaquio.
With his feared Wushu striking, Belingon plans on booking a second crack at the ONE Bantamweight World Championship with a victory over Leone.
“I am coming for that belt, and no one can stop me. Whoever they put in front of me, I will be looking to destroy. I am a man on a mission. I want to show everybody that I am the real title challenger-in-waiting,” he declared.
However, it will not be an easy task for Belingon as Leone is poised to take the Filipino’s stature as the rightful contender to vie for the coveted world title.
The 28-year-old native of Cortland, New York is no stranger to Fernandes as he once shared the ONE Championship cage with the Brazilian champion in August 2017.
Leone is similarly looking to secure another world championship opportunity after bowing down to Fernandes via first-round submission.
Belingon revealed that his main objective at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR is to keep his status as the No. 1-ranked bantamweight contender in the organization.
“I know what’s at stake here, and I know I have to beat Andrew Leone to get another shot at the title. I have to continue to give fans what they want and to leave nothing to chance. The title is within reach. I will beat Andrew Leone, and continue my march towards the belt,” he stressed.
Despite winning his three assignments in 2017, Belingon seeks to be more impressive this time around as he takes on Leone, who is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a highly-decorated wrestler.
Although he expects Leone to fully utilize his upper hand in the grappling department, Belingon is not worried as he made it a priority to concentrate on improving his wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu.
“After working on my wrestling and grappling over the past couple of years, I have really improved. Because of this improved grappling, my striking can be showcased even more,” he explained.
Belingon bared that he has watched Leone’s encounter with Fernandes and is confident that he possesses the power to finish the American standout.
“Andrew is a tough fighter, and I think his strength is on the ground. I will not hesitate to grapple with him. However, if he wants to stand and bang with me, I won’t hesitate to strike with him. I have the better chance of finishing the bout in the stand-up,” he warned.
Even though competing for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship title remains as his top priority, Belingon clarified that his current focus is fixed on his cage clash with Leone at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR.
“My opponent is not easy, and I am not taking him for granted, which is why I am completely focused on my upcoming bout this April 20. I need to be at my absolute best, so I can turn in another great performance for the fans,” he conveyed.
The stakes are incredibly high for Belingon, unveiling that he is preparing himself to be in the best shape of his life.
Belingon knows that each win from here on out is another step closer to the ONE Bantamweight World Championship belt.
“I know I will meet Bibiano again in that cage. There is not a day that has passed that I have not thought about that first bout against him. I am ready to face the champion. I am ready, more than ever. But for now, my goal to win and defeat Andrew Leone. I want to keep my dream alive,” he concluded.

Crashing bantamweight title picture is in Andrew Leone’s crosshairs

PRESS RELEASE

Andrew Leone
After falling short in his bid to become a world champion in the sport nearly eight months ago, former world title challenger Andrew Leone is brimming with eagerness to redeem himself as he kicks off his 2018 with a marquee match-up versus a celebrated Filipino dynamo.
Leone is slated to lock horns with Team Lakay’s Kevin Belingon in the main event of ONE: HEROES OF HONOR, which takes place at the 20,000-seater SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on 20 April.
“I love Asia. I’ve been living and competing here for a very long time. I’ve been to different countries and cities, including Manila. Manila is a special place because it’s where I had my promotional debut for ONE Championship,” he said.
“It’s great to have my first match for 2018 in Manila. It feels like I’ve gone full circle,” Leone quipped.
Leone, an eight-year mixed martial arts veteran who dynamically carved his niche in the Asian combat scene, seems destined to be a world champion after making waves in the organization when he debuted with a victory over Belingon’s teammate and future ONE Interim Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio in May 2013.
Ever since his maiden appearance in ONE Championship, the 28-year-old native of Cortland, New York has strung together two solid victories over high-level opponents inside the cage.
For a highly-decorated competitor like Leone, who trains alongside some of the most talented combat sports athletes in Asia at the renowned Bali MMA gym in Bali, Indonesia, it took him four arduous years to get a crack at ONE Championship’s prestigious bantamweight crown.
“There were moments in my career when I was already near to the title shot, but suddenly I lost the momentum due to circumstances that were beyond my control. I really pushed myself very hard to reach the top. Finally after four years, I had the chance to vie for the world title,” he shared.
Leone challenged Bibiano Fernandes for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship in August 2017, but he yielded to the Brazilian legend via first-round submission.
“It was a tough loss. I worked very hard for that bout, and I only lasted for almost two minutes inside the cage with him. I believe I could have done more against Bibiano Fernandes, but it is what it is,” he recalled.
Leone affirmed that he still has gold on his mind, revealing that he views his upcoming meeting with Belingon as a chance to throw himself back into the world title mix.
“I heard Kevin Belingon was supposed to be next in line for the title, but the promotion had other plans. Winning the title is my happy ending in this journey. If I win this, I know I will be in a great position to face Bibiano for the title again,” he stated.
Belingon has won four-straight contests since October 2016, including scintillating triumphs over ex-bantamweight title contenders such as Toni Tauru and Reece McLaren.
The 30-year-old Baguio City resident desperately wants a second shot at the ONE Bantamweight World Championship after being submitted by Fernandes in January 2016.
Against a stand-up specialist like Belingon, there are clear areas where Leone sees that he has an advantage and will be looking to capitalize, including the exuberance of youth.
"I’m a lot younger. I think I’m faster, I’ve got some good scrambling, and I’m a little bit taller," he explained. "I’m going to get there in and just wrestle him. I see a lot of different positions coming up that I’m going to take advantage of and come out on top.”
According to Leone, his warpath back to the ONE Bantamweight World Championship picture commences on 20 April.
“A win in this match will definitely put me in line for a rematch against Bibiano. I want that title shot again. If Kevin Belingon is blocking my way to earn that spot, I have to take him out. I will give everything I’ve got,” he ended.

Manila gearing up for debut of ONE Super Series at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR

PRESS RELEASE

While the Philippine capital is abuzz with the announcement of the main event showdown between Team Lakay’s Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon (17-5) and Bali-based American Andrew Leone (8-3), another spectacle is ready to be unveiled at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Making its debut on 20 April at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR is the highly-anticipated ONE Super Series, a new iteration in ONE Championship’s efforts to bring martial arts to the forefront in mainstream culture.

According to ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, the ONE Super Series aims to provide the world's best martial artists a prestigious global platform to showcase the beauty of Asia's striking arts such as Muay Thai, kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, Kung Fu, wushu, sanda, silat, lethwei, and more.

It will feature various-styled bouts under ONE Championship’s unique rule sets, including kickboxing and Muay Thai, some in the ring, some in the cage, and with ONE Championship branded boxing or grappling gloves. It’s an exciting development in the professional martial arts landscape that could have a lasting effect on the future of the sport.

The premiere offering for Manila’s ONE Super Series is a battle featuring international kickboxing superstar Giorgio Petrosyan of Italy, who takes on 25-year-old “Smokin’” Jo Nattawut of Thailand.

The 32-year-old Petrosyan is known as one of the finest kickboxing talents in the world. He began his professional Muay Thai career at the age of 16 competing between bantamweight and middleweight, winning multiple titles across each division.

With a professional kickboxing record of 85-2-2, 2NC, Petrosyan is known for his incredible 6-year 42-bout win streak which is considered one of the most dominant reigns in middleweight history.

On the other hand, Nattawut is a kickboxing star from Atlanta, Georgia with a professional kickboxing record of 60-11-2. Originally from Korat, Thailand, Nattawut is a former Lion Fight Super Welterweight Champion and WMC Champion, known for his powerful elbow and knee strikes.

Aside from the marquee talent debuting at ONE Super Series in Manila, is the unveiling of a brand new ONE Super Series five-rope ring. Up until this point, ONE Championship has held martial arts bouts inside the famed ONE cage, but at ONE: HEROES OF HONOR, a new battlefield will be revealed.

Specifications and details have yet to be announced, but all bouts are expected to be held inside the new ring, including bouts that are officiated under ONE’s Global Rule Set. This means that, for the first time in ONE Championship history, Mixed Martial Arts contests will be held in the ring instead of in the cage.

This is a huge development and one that could be a potential game-changer. The ring is set to be unveiled in the coming weeks, with select media getting the opportunity to have a first-look before the arena doors open to the public.
